Let’s talk about what CBD is and where it comes from, much like the phoenix in Greek mythology, CBD is being born again from the ashes of its past. What’s CBD you ask? CBD is a chemical compound known as cannabidiol. It is a cannabinoid that comes from the cannabis plant family. Hemp and marijuana are two different plant species in the same plant family known as Cannabis. Hemp is completely different from marijuana in its function, cultivation and application. Hemp is a cannabis plant that contains sterile seeds, stalk and roots, meaning no THC. While marijuana is a cannabis plant composed of viable seeds, flowers and leaves that yield high THC content. THC is a cannabinoid that can reproduce psychoactive effects above the 0.3% threshold. Hemp contains high CBD yield, as well as fiber, fatty acids, amino acids and trace amounts of THC. Hemp plants contain less than 0.3% THC, too little to reproduce any psychoactive effects. So what does this me for you and I? It means hemp-derived CBD, is within the federal legal limits to consume so you can get all the health benefits of hemp and CBD with no psychoactive affects! Therefore, it is legal for consumption in all 50 United States.
In the mid-1990s, scientific research revealed that our bodies have what is called an endocannabinoid system (eCB). This new discovery enabled a major breakthrough in research related to therapies focused on reducing inflammation and disrupting pain signaling. Scientists discovered that this neuromodulator system within our bodies contains CB1 and CB2 receptors. Cannabinoids found in the cannabis plants of Marijuana and Hemp attach to these receptors. For centuries cannabis plants have been used as medicine even in the 1850-1937 era tinctures for dental pain and other analgesic ointments were found in the pharmacy shelves of your nearest drug store.
Well we all know history repeats it self, right? We are at the beginning of the new revolution of our time where across the nation the medical community is putting pressure on Congress to change how CBD is governed and to shed light on the truth in research of the healing properties of cannabinoids. There has been a recent explosion of research that continues to flood the market place. As a leading research group, the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) has stated, “Multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injur[ies], neuropathic pain, cancer, atherosclerosis, stroke, myocardial infarction, hypertension, glaucoma, obesity/metabolic syndrome and osteoporosis are some of the diseases in which alternations in the eCB system have been demonstrated, thus paving the way for new therapeutic strategies aimed at restoring normal eCB functionality.” [1]
CBD has been the subject of thousands of clinical studies and is even patented by the United States National Institutes of Health (NIH) for its health properties, but has only recently become more widely available due to the technological advances in the extraction and purity processes. So it looks like the future of CBD is here to stay. This is wonderful because keeping our bodies healthy in life brings forth abundance and longevity. We are devoted to keeping our loved ones happy and healthy as long as possible. We welcome you on that journey. Welcome to Texas Health Horizon. Where our horizon starts with you and begins with hope. Stay tuned as we navigate you through the healing and political history of cannabis.
